Thyroid cancer arises in the thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. This gland produces hormones that regulate your metabolism. Thyroid hormones also help control body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate. Thyroid cancer, a form of endocrine cancer, is generally easily treatable and has an excellent cure rate. There are four main types of thyroid cancer. These are papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. The papillary type is the most common. All four types differ in their level of aggression. Thyroid cancer that is detected early can often be successfully treated.
